The Computer Science PhD and MSc by Research at the University of Bristol is based in the School of Computer Science in the Merchant Venturers Building — an international centre of excellence in the foundations and applications of computing, located alongside Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Full-time study takes up to four years (up to eight part-time), with research spanning intelligent systems, digital media, foundations, personal systems, and architecture and design. Bristol is known for its concentration of high-technology industry, and the School maintains close relationships with these organisations through collaborative projects, staff secondments and visiting industrial staff.

About this programme
PhD applicants must hold or achieve a minimum of a merit at master's level in a relevant discipline, with exceptional applicants holding a first-class undergraduate degree considered without a master's; MSc by Research applicants need an upper second-class honours degree, both subject to readiness for research study. Before applying, candidates identify a supervisor from the School's academic staff and complete a Supervisor Suitability Form. A number of funded studentships supported by research councils, industry and the University are available each year, and Bristol alumni receive a 25% postgraduate tuition-fee discount.
