Why Study in Spain?
Spanish universities offer Grado, Máster Universitario and Doctorado programmes across a wide range of disciplines for international students.
Education System: Spanish higher education offers the Grado (first-cycle university degree), the Máster Universitario (official Master's degree) and the Doctorado (doctoral/PhD-level studies). Spain also has higher vocational education and higher artistic education. The current Spanish university framework and the Ministry of Education are the authoritative references for programme structures.
Tuition Fees
Official SEPIE guidance places many public-university Grado (Bachelor's) fees at approximately EUR 700-1,800 per academic year. The Spanish Ministry's statistical data for 2024-25 reports an average public-university first-enrolment Bachelor's credit price of EUR 15.37 per ECTS credit as a statistical reference. Private universities set their own fees and may charge considerably more. Tuition varies by programme, region and institution.
Fees for Máster Universitario and doctoral programmes vary by institution, programme and region; there is no single national Master's tuition range. Verify the exact fees with the institution.
Doctorado (doctoral) fees vary by institution, programme and region; there is no single national figure. Verify the exact fees with the institution.
Public-university tuition guidance is a statistical reference and does not apply equally to every programme, autonomous community, international student, private institution or postgraduate course. Check the exact fees with the chosen institution.
Visa & Work Rights
National long-stay study visa (visado de estancia de larga duración por estudios) for study stays exceeding 90 days - required for non-EU/EEA students admitted to a recognised higher-education institution for a full-time programme leading to a recognised higher-education qualification
The legal decision period is generally one month from the day after submission, but may be extended if additional documents, an interview or further checks are required; apply well before your course start date
For 2026, the minimum financial means for a student applying alone is 100% IPREM, which is EUR 600 per month, corresponding to EUR 7,200 for 12 months. The requirement is calculated according to the period of stay, so it is not a fixed annual figure for every study period. Accompanying family members add 75% IPREM (EUR 450 per month) for the first member and 50% IPREM (EUR 300 per month) for each additional member. If accommodation for the entire stay has been paid in advance, the corresponding amount may be deducted where accepted under the applicable rules. This is a proof-of-funds requirement, not an estimate of actual living costs and not tuition.
EUR 90 for the national long-stay study visa (Order AUC/891/2024); payment may be made in euros, local currency or the applicable currency of the place of application under the official exchange-rate rules. In Nigeria, the Consulate General in Lagos currently lists the local study-visa fee as N139,700 - this is the current Lagos local-currency figure, not a universal national fee.
Under the current Spanish immigration framework (Royal Decree 1155/2024), holders of a long-stay study authorisation for higher education may work as an employee (cuenta ajena) or as self-employed (cuenta propia) without an additional work authorisation, provided the activity is compatible with their studies, up to a maximum of 30 hours per week.
Eligible higher-education graduates who have achieved at least Level 6 of the European Qualifications Framework can apply for a non-extendable residence authorisation of up to 24 months to seek suitable employment related to their level of study or to develop a business project (búsqueda de empleo / emprender un proyecto empresarial). This is not an automatic permanent-residence route and not an automatic work permit - if suitable employment or the qualifying business activity is secured, the appropriate residence or work authorisation must then be obtained. Qualifying students who complete their studies and satisfy the legal requirements may also be able to modify their status to residence and work without a new visa, but this is not automatic.
Living Costs
SEPIE guidance estimates average student expenditure at below EUR 1,100 per month, depending on the city and lifestyle. This is separate from the IPREM-based visa proof-of-funds requirement of EUR 600 per month, which is an immigration threshold rather than an estimate of actual living expenses.
Common Questions
Do I need a study visa to study in Spain?
Non-EU/EEA students need a national long-stay study visa (visado de estancia de larga duración por estudios) for study stays exceeding 90 days. You must be admitted to a recognised higher-education institution for a full-time programme, and the application must include proof that the relevant enrolment or registration fees have been paid. Study stays of up to 90 days do not use this visa; depending on your nationality, a Schengen short-stay visa may be required.
How much money do I need to show for a Spain student visa in 2026?
For 2026, the minimum financial means for a student applying alone is 100% IPREM, which is EUR 600 per month, corresponding to EUR 7,200 for 12 months. The requirement is calculated according to the period of stay, so it is not a fixed annual figure for every study period. This is a proof-of-funds requirement, not an estimate of actual living costs.
How much does it cost to study at a Spanish university?
Official SEPIE guidance places many public-university Grado (Bachelor's) fees at approximately EUR 700-1,800 per academic year. Private universities set their own fees and may charge considerably more. Tuition varies by programme, region and institution, so check the exact fees with your chosen university.
How much does it cost to live in Spain as a student?
SEPIE guidance estimates average student expenditure at below EUR 1,100 per month, depending on the city and lifestyle. This is separate from the IPREM-based visa proof-of-funds requirement of EUR 600 per month, which is an immigration threshold rather than an estimate of actual living expenses.
Can international students work while studying in Spain?
Yes. Under the current Spanish immigration framework, holders of a long-stay study authorisation for higher education may work as an employee or as self-employed without an additional work authorisation, provided the activity is compatible with their studies, up to a maximum of 30 hours per week.
How long does a Spain study visa take?
The legal decision period is generally one month from the day after submission, but may be extended if additional documents, an interview or further checks are required. Applications submitted from outside Spain should generally be made at least two months before the start of your studies.
What happens after I graduate in Spain?
Eligible higher-education graduates who have achieved at least Level 6 of the European Qualifications Framework can apply for a non-extendable residence authorisation of up to 24 months to seek suitable employment related to their level of study or to develop a business project. This is not an automatic permanent-residence route and not an automatic work permit - the appropriate residence or work authorisation must then be obtained.
Do I need a TIE after arriving in Spain?
For study stays longer than six months, students must apply personally for a Foreigner Identity Card (TIE - Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) within one month of entering Spain. The long-stay study visa incorporates the initial authorisation to stay, but it does not replace the TIE for the entire long-term stay.
