Common Questions
Do I need to pay tuition fees to study in Finland?
Non-EU/EEA students pay tuition for English-taught bachelor's and master's degree programmes. Fees range from €8,000 to €20,000 per year and vary by university and programme — the exact fee is listed on Studyinfo.fi. Doctoral programmes do not charge tuition, and exchange students covered by an agreement are exempt. Universities also offer scholarships for fee-paying students.
How much money do I need for the Finnish student residence permit?
The Finnish Immigration Service requires you to have at least €800 per month at your disposal — €9,600 for the first year — available in your bank account when you submit the application. If your tuition fee will be paid later, you must also hold the tuition funds separately. These funds must cover living costs; they cannot be used to pay the tuition fee.
Can I work while studying in Finland?
Yes. With a residence permit for studies you may work in paid employment in any field for an average of 30 hours per week — the average is measured across the year, so full-time work is possible during holidays. Work that is a required part of your degree, such as internships or a thesis agreed in advance, is not counted against this limit.
Can I stay in Finland after graduation to look for work?
Yes. You can apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business, valid for up to two years. It can be used in three parts (each at least six months, with the last part ending within three years of the first part starting) and must be applied for within five years of your studies permit expiring. Once granted, it includes an unrestricted right to work.
